Publication Claims the Best Lobster Roll in Maine… Isn’t in Maine
When it comes to our Pine Tree State lobster rolls, we don’t mess around. And when someone says otherwise, we tend to get a bit defensive.
In Maine, a few things are taken very seriously: wild blueberries, loyalty to New England sports teams, and, of course, seafood. Lobster rolls, in particular, are practically more integral to our identity than the state flag.
Alright, who is making the call in this category, and how are they deciding? Because, frankly, something isn’t adding up.
24/7 Wall St., through their 24/7 Tempo section, identified a classic sandwich to try in each state and recommended a shop or restaurant known for serving a standout version. While the goal was to highlight iconic sandwiches and where to find them, the article missed the mark for Maine. Despite this, the effort aimed to celebrate local flavors across the country.
With that said, we know the lobster roll is the best local sandwich in Maine. But wait—how is it not in Maine?
According to 24/7 Wall St. and their article, ‘The Best Local Sandwich to Try in Every State,’ it seems like they might have gotten a little confused with their selection. Their pick for Maine was, of course, a cold lobster roll in Rockport. Sounds normal, right? But then they chose The Lobster Pool as the restaurant serving the best one. Here’s the catch: The Lobster Pool is indeed in Rockport—but Rockport, Massachusetts.
Now, we could be wrong, but we’ve searched high and low for a restaurant called The Lobster Pool in Rockport, Maine, and as far as we can tell, it doesn’t exist.
While it’s possible we’re mistaken and there is a 'Lobster Pool' restaurant hiding somewhere in Rockport, Maine, all we can find is The Lobster Pool in Rockport, Massachusetts. Despite this confusion, here’s what 24/7 Wall St. had to say about their (incorrect) selection:
Lobster is so plentiful in Maine that many lobster shacks serve lobster that was plucked from the water less than 24 hours before. When steamed or boiled, chilled, tossed with a little mayo, and served on a split-top bun, there’s no better taste of Maine.
So, there you have it—the best lobster roll in Maine apparently comes from Massachusetts. Yeah, we’re not buying it either.
Listen, we get it. Maine used to be part of Massachusetts, but that’s ancient history. We’ve got our own identity now—and more importantly, our own lobster rolls. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
