One of the Best Donuts in the U.S. Is Found Exclusively in Maine
With how much Mainers love their whoopie pies, it should be no surprise how much we certainly do love our sweets here in Maine.
And truthfully, it doesn’t get much sweeter than a donut! Donuts are sweet treats that many folks around the country adore. These round pastries come in various flavors and styles, from glazed to jelly-filled to our personal favorite, the old-fashioned.
Folks love donuts for many reasons, from their soft texture to their delicious taste, and simply the way they can brighten up any morning.
Whether you prefer them with coffee or as a quick snack, donuts are a treat that can bring joy to anyone's day.
But, hold on, are they 'donuts' or 'doughnuts?'
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, most dictionaries enter donut as a variant of doughnut. The spelling of donut without the -ough has appeared in enough written sources and has been made popular by brands such as Dunkin' Donuts, that it has become an accepted spelling.
So, either spelling is acceptable, but which 'donut' or 'doughnut' is one of the best in the U.S. and is exclusively found in our Pine Tree State?
The publication LoveFood recently released an article highlighting 'The best doughnut in every state and DC,' and Maine’s pick is certainly a very popular choice.
LoveFood chose The Holy Donut’s 'Triple Berry' as their pick for the best doughnut in the state, saying the following,
Things are done a little differently at The Holy Donut, which has four locations – two in Portland and one in both Auburn and Scarborough. Here, freshly mashed Maine potatoes (yes, really) are added to the donut mixture to give it a moist texture. And people love the results. The triple berry, which has blueberry, raspberry and strawberry in its glaze, is a perennial favorite.
With our state berry being the wild blueberry in Maine, there’s no surprise that it’s incorporated into our 'best doughnut.'
