A Bangor man who was wanted in connection with a stabbing and car theft has been arrested in New York.

New York Police Arrest a Bangor, Maine Attempted Murder Suspect in a Stolen Vehicle

Abel Perez, 37, of Bangor was arrested on June 22, 2026 by Guilderland, New York Police, who told Maine authorities the suspect was driving a vehicle stolen in Bangor.

Bangor Police spokesperson Katy England says Perez was wanted by Maine authorities after a violent incident on Essex Street that sent one person to the hospital.

Officers were called to the Bangor home just before midnight on June 20, 2026, for a report of an assault involving a knife.

The victim sustained critical injuries.

An investigation pointed to Perez as the suspect for the stabbing, and also in the theft of a vehicle belonging to the victim's neighbor.

The victim was hospitalized and the vehicle was reported stolen.

That report alerted Guilderland, New York Police when they apprehended Perez.

He's charged with:

  • Attempted murder
  • Elevated aggravated assault
  • Domestic violence assault
  • Theft by unauthorized taking.

Perez is being held in New York until he can be extradited to Maine to face those charges.
