Bangor, Maine News Update: February 11, 2020
The Maine Center for Disease Control says one resident is being evaluated for possible coronavirus. The person's identity and location wasn't made public, but officials say it's not one of the Colby College students who recently traveled to China. The person has agreed to stay home pending the outcome of the testing, and officials say the risk for coronavirus in Maine remains low.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge had to be closed for about 40 minutes on Monday, when ice began falling from the top of the span. When the weather warmed up, ice began dropping in big sheets, making travel treacherous for drivers. Officials say it's only the third time they've had to close the bridge for this reason.
Maine Department of Corrections officials say the overcrowding at the Penobscot County Jail is getting out of hand. The jail’s licensed capacity is 157 inmates, but it regularly exceeds that limit to 175, spending over 500 thousand dollars in fees last year to pay for them to stay at other jails. A new proposal would build an 8-story structure to house up to 250 people.
Renovation work has begun to change a former supermarket in Columbia into a vocational center for students from western Washington County. The work is expected to be completed in time for classes to begin in September. The new center will teach welding, automotive repair, and early childhood development.
Early bird registration is open this week for the annual Maine Fisherman’s Forum, scheduled to open March 5th. In addition to the informational seminars and trade show, the forum features a silent auction and dinner to benefit a scholarship for children of fishing families. Anglers are invited to take part in the Schoodic Lake Ice Fishing Derby this weekend, with the proceeds to benefit the Milo Fire Department. The derby encompasses several lakes and ponds, and will include prizes like an ATV and a Husqvarna chainsaw.
