Stand-alone buildings are huddled around the mall itself, including one 2-story structure that was a hub for book-lovers for years.
Bangor, Maine, Building Up for Auction Housed Several Retail Stores
The two-story building has been both a Borders Bookstore and BAM, or Books-a-Million. Grabbing a coffee and browsing for books there became the definition of date night with my husband.
Other than a brief stint as a Spirit of Halloween location in 2025, the Bangor building has been empty since 2024.
Bangor, Maine Mall-Area Building is Taking Bids in an Online Auction
Tranzon Auctions of Portland opened the online auction period today, and bids are being accepted through February 10, 2026, so there's no time to waste.
I love the inside of that building and its glass elevator in the center of the room, and I thought about what else might work there.
It could be an awesome beauty salon/day spa, with hairstyling on one level and spa services on the other.
Or maybe it could be an incredible toy store. This, from someone who misses walking through Toys R Us as an adult.
It would even make an interesting restaurant if someone wanted to install a larger kitchen.
Whatever it becomes, the new owners are getting a beautiful building. I hope they make it something fun.
