The Bangor Fire Department has released the name of a firefighter who died suddenly this week.

The announcement on the Bangor Fire Department's Facebook page identified the deceased firefighter as Jacob 'Jake' Madden. Although he just joined the Bangor Department in 2021, Madden had previously served the communities of Lowell and Old Town. He is survived by his fiancée, Erica Batson, and his 3 children.

Although there has been no comment about the manner of Madden's death, the formal announcement on the Bangor Professional Firefighter's Association IAFF Local 772, by  Association President Jared Willey talked about the toll the job can take on firefighters.

Serving a community as a firefighter is an honorable and professionally rewarding job; it can also take a toll both physically and mentally leading to behavioral health challenges, including suicidal thoughts.

Peer support is being provided for Madden's family and fellow firefighters, as they grieve the tragic loss of a man who dedicated his life to community service.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Jake Madden's family and friends, the members of the Bangor, Old Town, and Lowell Fire Departments, as well as to Maine's entire public safety community.
