The Bangor Fire Department is asking residents to shovel out the fire hydrants in their neighborhoods.

There are a lot of fire hydrants in Bangor, so it's no surprise that it can take city workers several days to get to each one and remove the snow from around it. And, in the meantime, the neighborhood is left vulnerable because firefighters won't have easy access to the water they need in an emergency. Those valuable minutes to shovel out that hydrant could be a matter of life or death, or the level of damage done by the fire.

So consider taking a few minutes today and just clear the snow around your local hydrant. Fire officials ask that folks clear 3 feet around the hydrant, on all sides.
