Like many other innovations, ATVs began with WAR. It was WWII, and Soichiro Honda (Honda's founder), couldn't find any fuel for his car because of a shortage brought on by the war. So, Honda attached a small engine to his bicycle and created an idea that others rolled (pun not intended) with.

While not a traditional ATV, it spawned several different manipulations of this bike and other smaller-than-automobile vehicles with a little engine attached until 1961, when the first official ATV was created in Toronto, Canada. It wouldn't be until the 1970s that the ATV gained popularity in America, and today in 2024, it has taken over Maine.
