Maine Ranked Among America’s Least Sinful States for 2026

Our Pine Tree State was recently ranked toward the bottom of a report highlighting how ‘sinful’ each state is compared to the others.

According to a recent report, not every state across the country is considered equally ‘sinful’—whatever that may mean.

As the report states, while hate crimes declined slightly in 2024, they remain elevated compared with earlier years.

That, along with drug overdose deaths, continues to present a serious nationwide challenge. In its ‘Most Sinful States in America (2026)’ report, personal finance company WalletHub evaluated all 50 states across seven categories—Anger & Hatred, Jealousy, Excesses & Vices, Greed, Lust, Vanity, and Laziness—to determine where the country may need the greatest moral improvement, supported by expert commentary and key highlights.

According to WalletHub’s ‘Most Sinful States in America (2026)’ report, Maine ranked 46th overall, placing it among the least ‘sinful’ states in the country.

Our state ranked 37th in Anger & Hatred, 47th in Jealousy, 21st in Excesses & Vices, 22nd in Greed, 48th in Lust, 46th in Vanity, and 31st in Laziness, reflecting generally lower levels across most categories.

Other New England states ranked as less sinful than Maine on this list include Vermont at 47th and New Hampshire at 49th.

On the opposite end, the five most sinful states—ranked from fifth to first—are Texas, Florida, Louisiana, California, and Nevada.

And there you have it! For 2026, Maine is America’s fifth least sinful state, at least according to the findings in this report.
