Who Were the Victims of the Crash?

Maine State Police Corporal Dennis Quint says the crash happened on U.S. Highway 1 in Westfield just before 4:00 in the afternoon. 41-year-old April Kellerhals of Littleton and 81-year-old Dale Drake of Presque Isle both died as the result of the crash.

How Did It Happen?

An investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash by the Maine State Police determined that Kellerhals was driving north when she went around a corner and found Drake driving in her lane. There was no way for Kellerhals to get out of the way and the two vehicles collided head-on. A witness told police they had seen Drake driving too fast and not staying in his lane.

Kellerhals was transported by ambulance to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, where she was pronounced dead. Drake died at the scene.

U.S. Highway 1 was closed for several hours, in both directions, while police investigated the crash. Maine State Police Troopers were assisted by the Maine Warden Service, Mars Hill Fire Department, Maine Department of Transportation, Central Aroostook Ambulance, and Brewer's Towing Service.
