8 Observations About Maine From Some Folks From Away
Traveling bloggers Amber and Lee recently visited Maine from the Washington area and came to some very true and somewhat humorous conclusions about Vacationland.
In their blog Awed Travelers, Amber and Lee share photos and their observations after their visit and we think they really understand the way life should be.
Here are the 8 things they observed on their travels in Maine:
- 1
The Houses are Odd
They noticed many Maine houses don't have even one straight roof line. Many have obvious additions, usually garages, and there seems to be no thought about the practicality of many homes.
- 2
The Rural Roads are a Mystery
Unlike the Midwest they note Maine's roads "snake and arc through the forest and farms and wetlands, following the contour of the terrain exactly.." They also humorously say "And all the locals hurtle along doing at least 45. Seriously, it is like taking a roller coaster ride every trip. I have no idea how they keep their Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in the cup on the way home."
- 3
Dunkin' and Dollar Stores Galore
They noticed our love for good coffee and a bargain. Stand alone or attached to a gas station you can find a Dunkin' Donuts in just about every town, it's true. Family Dollars and dollar stores are also a popular shopping staple for most Maine towns.

You Always Know What Town You're In
Pretty much every town, big or small, has a post office and a town line marker sign. They note "And precisely what town you are in appears to be of great importance. There is sign on every road, no matter how obscure, that crosses a boundary." They must not understand we need the signs to match up to our gazetteer!
- 5
There Are Strange Businesses in Strange Places
They don't understand the concept of working from home I guess. They think it's random that "Dentists, massage therapists, accountants, well drillers – they just turn any random house or barn into a business just anyplace along a country road."
- 6
Rock Walls and Cemeteries Everywhere!
Including "indestructible Town Pounds" Amber and Lee were in awe of the numerous graveyards and rock walls that have stood the test of time. They mentioned finding headstones with dates back to the 1800's, but many Maine cemeteries hold stones even older!
- 7
Maine Name Play
Fortunately for us creative Mainers we have noticed how fun it is to use our state name in our business names. Maine works many ways! Can't do that in every state for sure!

All About Personalized Plates
Apparently this is the place they have seen the most vanity license plates per capita on their travels. It's no secret Mainers are weird about their vehicles. We will let them rust out to nothing, but that rust bucket probably has some nice tires and a personalize license plate.
