Here in Maine, we’re not the biggest fans of change—we like things the way they are. But when it’s a good change, we do our best to embrace it, even if it takes us a little time.

Well, having said all that, what exactly is the ‘20-hour rule’? What is it, and where is it legally active?

New York State has introduced new wage, hour, and paid leave laws, requiring employers to review and update their policies to stay compliant. These changes impact how businesses handle employee pay and time off, and more details will be provided by the New York State Department of Labor.

Alright, having covered that, what are some of the laws that encompass this, and why is it known as the ‘20-hour rule’?

Starting January 1st, 2025, New York became the first state to require paid prenatal leave, granting employees up to 20 hours of paid leave per year for prenatal healthcare. This leave applies to both full-time and part-time employees and covers doctor visits, medical tests, and pregnancy-related care.

Employees automatically receive the full 20 hours, which must be used in hourly increments and does not accrue over time.

This benefit stands separate from other leave policies, reinforcing New York’s commitment to supporting workers during pregnancy.

So, there you have it! That’s what the ‘20-hour rule’ is, where it’s legally active, and how it could potentially make its way to Maine.
