A woman in a wheelchair was seriously injured when she was struck by a car on River Road in Windham.

WABI-TV reports the 56-year-old woman had wandered away from her assisted living home and was sitting in the middle of the road after dark Wednesday evening. She was wearing dark clothing and so wasn't immediately visible to motorists.

It was just before 5:00 when the victim was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by a 69-year-old woman from Windham. The woman in the chair was seriously injured but is expected to survive. The driver wasn't hurt in the crash. Police say speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash and that it's believed to have been the result of pedestrian error.
