A Wiscasset toddler suffered serious eye injuries when it was attacked by her babysitter's dog.

According to Centralmaine.com, the 17-month old girl was attacked at a home on Raymond Road just after 6:00 Tuesday evening. The dog's owners, who often care for the child, were home at the time of the attack.

The girl sustained serious, but non-life threatening eye injuries and was airlifted to a hospital. Police say she will probably end up being sent to a Boston hospital.

The 8-year-old boxer has been quarantined at Coastal Humane Society, which is state law. Police say the child has been around the dog since she was a newborn and there had never been any problems. But, for some reason on Tuesday, the dog went after the girl. The dog is, reportedly, up to date on its rabies vaccinations.

Police say it's likely that the owners will decide to have the animal put down.
