With the drop in temperatures, the Gardiner Police Department wants to remind parents that bundling up kids then stuffing them into their car seats can create a loose harness, which is a potentially serious safety hazard.

Gardiner PD Officials recommend you don't strap your child into their car seat while they're wearing anything thicker than a light fleece. You can ensure your child's seat straps are tight enough by using your thumb and pointer finger to pinch one of the straps at collar bone level. If the straps are tight enough and fitted properly, you shouldn't be able to gather any strap material between your fingers.

If you have any car seat questions, or would like to schedule a free car seat inspection, contact the Safety Officer at your local police or fire department.
