A physician from Windsor has died from her injuries after being struck by a pickup while riding her bike near her home.

Centralmaine.com reports the accident happened just before 5:00 Monday evening. Dr. Carol Eckert was taken by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after the accident on Wingood Road. She had suffered head injuries and several fractures and was unconscious when help arrived.

The driver of the pickup, 20-year-old James Mayo of Somerville said the sun was in his eyes as he was traveling south and he stopped when he heard a noise that sounded like he had hit someone. He found Eckert and her bicycle in the ditch and immediately started performing chest compressions while his passenger, 19-year-old Tabitha Spencer called 911.

Police say the truck's mirror was pushed into the window after the accident. So far no charges have been filed but the crash remains under investigation.

Dr. Eckert left behind a husband and two grown children. She turned 63 on Thursday, the day she died.
