The widow of a man who was struck and killed by an antique firetruck during Bangor's 4th of July parade three years ago has settled her lawsuit with the City and parade sponsor.

Wallace Fenlason died when the antique tractor he was riding was struck from behind by an antique firetruck. After he was knocked from the tractor, the firetruck then ran over him, killing him instantly. An investigation concluded that the truck had insufficient brake fluid that prevented the driver from stopping it in time.

The accident happened during a difficult holiday for law enforcement and city officials. A standoff on Park Street, in which an armed man was firing out the window of an apartment, forced planners to change the route of the parade. The new route called for the vehicles to make a sharp turn from Main Street to Water Street, and that's where the accident happened.

Wallace's widow, Lorena Fenlason of Holden sued the City of Bangor, the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club (who sponsored the parade), and the driver of the firetruck. When the investigation was completed, the driver was dropped from the suit because it was determined that there was no way he could have stopped the truck and he wasn't responsible for its maintenance.

That lawsuit was settled this week for an undisclosed amount of money. However, her lawyer, Daniel Kagan, told WABI-TV that, by law, the city cannot pay out more than $400,000.
