Mainers love our state, but how do outsiders think of it?  And which state is the "most hated" in our country?

Results from a survey taken by YouGov.com shows that New Jersey is the most hated.  Why?  New Jersey received it's low score because outsiders think that the state's residents are a mixture of the kind of people seen on "Jersey Shore" and "The Sopranos" TV shows.  Also the perception that there's a bunch of chemical plants and industrial sites there.  So much for "The Garden State" motto!

Maine is certainly one of the most beloved states in the nation, it tied for #3 with Wyoming, Alaska and Washington!

The paradise that is Hawaii was the top state in the country!

What YouGov.com did was to ask people what their "favorable" opinions of a state are, and then subtract the "negatives", creating a "net favor-ability score."  New Jersey was the only state in the survey to receive a negative net favor-ability score - 30 percent of the respondents said they liked the state while 40 percent didn't.

In contrast, 67 percent of the respondents had a favorable view of Hawaii.
