Westbrook city councilor Paul Emery has apologized for controversial comments he made about Governor LePage Tuesday night.

At a meeting to discuss the Democrats’ tax reform plan, Emery said if Governor LePage "goes to see his maker it wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit."

He also went on to say “in some countries, assassination is a political strategy, but unfortunately not here.”

Emery has apologized for the remarks, telling WGME-TV, “basically, I’m just saying I’m sorry.”

Emery made the controversial remarks after asking a question about paying for road repairs.

“That’s the part, the point I should have shut up, but I didn’t. I attempted to joke, which was in very poor taste,” Emery told WGME.

According to media reports, Westbrook Mayor Colleen Hilton is considering removing Emery from several committees, and Cumberland County Republican Committee Chairman Eric Lusk is calling on Emery to resign.
