An early morning home fire in Waterville has sent at least six people to the hospital.

According to the Kennebec Journal, the fire was reported just after 5:00 Wednesday morning and crews responded to 15 Summer Street. By 9:00, firefighters were still battling the flames.

A neighbor told the KJ that she heard screams for help shortly after 5 and, sometime later, saw a firefighter helping a young girl escape the fire. At least six people were taken to the hospital, although there's no word on how badly they were hurt. Officials say four tenants were able to get out on their own, but two needed help from firefighters. Neighbors say they think a dog may have died in the fire.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office will investigate to try and determine what sparked the blaze.
