Waterfront Concerts has announced it will ban smoking at its venues.

The announcement, made on its Facebook on Wednesday, was met with mixed reactions, with some welcoming the change, but many protesting the late notice as the outdoor concert season gets underway at Darling's Waterfront Pavilion in Bangor Saturday night with Tool.

The move comes in response to state rulings on smoking in venues that serve liquor and food, according to Waterfront Concerts.

In accordance with Maine’s Public Place Smoking Law (22 MRSA § 1550 et seq.) and recent rulings by the state on establishments that serve liquor and food, we are becoming a smoke-free establishment. We expect other venues across the state to follow the state's ruling.

The statement goes on to say that all legal smoking products, such as cigarettes and vape pens, will not be confiscated, but concert organizers ask that you not use them inside the venue.
