A water main break near the intersection of Broadway and State Street in Bangor reduced traffic to one lane Thursday morning as city crews worked to clean up the wet, icy mess.

The break occurred at about 1 a.m. near John Bapst High School, according to Bangor Public Works Dept.

Crews used a backhoe to dig out the broken pipe and remove the water that flowed down Broadway. Crews also were forced to sand State Street hill as the water turned to a sheet of ice on the road surface.
