Two people were taken to area hospitals after their vehicle collided with a moose in Howland Monday night.

Maine State Police say a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Shawna Newton of Bangor struck the animal on I-95.

The vehicle went off the road and came to rest in the median.

Newton suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

A passenger in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital.

The southbound side of the road was closed while crews assisted the victims and cleaned up the crash.
