Amazingly, no one was killed when a van struck a tractor trailer in Grand Isle on Monday afternoon.

Maine State Police responded to the crash on Route 1 just before 5:00 after another motorist reported that a minivan had been struck by a tractor trailer and the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. But the Trooper discovered, at the scene, that the minivan's driver, Dennis Pelletier, had been traveling west when he fell asleep and veered into oncoming traffic. The van struck the tractor trailer head-on, causing substantial damage to both vehicles.

The rig was left disabled in the middle of the road while crews worked to free Pelletier from his minivan. He was taken to Cary Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The semi's driver, Lawrence Davis of Blanchard Twp, was taken to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent with minor injuries.

The Grand Isle Fire Department assisted State Police at the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
