Volunteers will help area non-profits with their spring cleaning and sprucing up during the United Way's 'Day of Caring' later this month.

Non-profits, like summer camps and programs for the elderly, don't have a budget for many of the repairs and improvements that they need. So the United Way helps out by recruiting and organizing volunteers to spend a day helping out. The 'Day of Caring' is coming up on April 15th and will include a number of projects, both large and small.

Jesse Moriarity of the United Way told me that, when she worked for Emera Maine, the staff would volunteer at summer camps. They'd do whatever projects needed to get done, including painting, raking, and planting flowers. She said it was fun and made them all feel good, knowing that the kids and volunteers at the camp would be able to enjoy a clean and pretty environment!

One of the coolest parts of this event, in my opinion, is that you get to sign up for the project you want to take part in. So, if you love to paint, maybe you could volunteer to help out the Robinson Ballet Company, as they renovate their space. Or, if you prefer yard work and gardening, you could volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. Check the United of Eastern Maine's website for a complete list of available projects. And then sign up on the United Way's website! Each volunteer will receive a t-shirt and a complimentary lunch. What a great way to give back to the community!
