The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency says two New York men have been charged with selling heroin in Portland.

Luchone Elzey, 24, and Jacquil Turner, 21, both of the Bronx, New York, were both charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release Thursday.

For the past two months, agents from the MDEA Cumberland District Task Force conducted an investigation into the distribution of heroin by a group from New York City, said public safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Police say the investigation revealed that members of the group would travel weekly from New York to Portland with large amounts of heroin.

They would then sell heroin from a number of locations throughout Portland, typically local apartments, where the residents would receive heroin or money for letting the group use their home, the release said.

Wednesdey evening, drug agents searched an apartment at 409 Cumberland Ave., where undercover agents had previously purchased heroin, McCausland said.

Agents located Elzey and Turner inside the building, and the two were arrested without incident.

Police say approximately 8 ounces of heroin, the equivalent of 4,760 individual doses, and $4,000 in cash were seized from the apartment.

Elzey and Turner were transported to the Cumberland County Jail, where bail was set at $50,000 cash for Elzey and $25,000 cash for Turner.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and charges will likely be filed against the apartment renter and other people who were involved in distributing the drugs.
