A Phippsburg man and a 12-year-old Florida boy are recovering following a pair of separate hunting accidents in Maine.

The first incident occurred near Popham Beach on Wednesday, Corporal John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said in a news release.

Thomas Gilliam, 48, of Phippsburg parked his truck along the side of route 209 and walked across the road to look for signs of deer activity. While doing so, Gilliam stumbled and dropped his rifle. The butt end of the rifle hit the pavement and the gun discharged. The bullet passed through several fingers on his right hand as well as his left forearm.

Gilliam was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he remains in stable condition, MacDonald said.

On Thursday, a 12-year-old boy from New Port Richey, Florida, Ashton Crowther, shot himself in the foot while hunting with his father off Old Winn Road in Springfield, the release said.

The two had stopped along a woods road as they were heading back to their ATVs to return to camp for lunch. The boy placed the barrel of his rifle against his left foot and inadvertently pulled the trigger.

He was transported by his father and uncle to Penobscot Valley Hospital. He was examined at the Lincoln hospital and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
