A Bowdoinham man was charged with OUI after a boating accident that left two women seriously injured.

The incident was reported just after midnight on Oct. 30, the Maine Department of Marine Resources said Thursday in a news release.

Douglas Stevenson, 44, was operating a 29-foot Four Winns powerboat on the Kennebec River, when the boat ran aground near the south end of Swan Island, the release said.

The Maine Marine Patrol said the initial investigation indicates the boat was travelling at a high rate of speed.

Two of three passengers aboard the boat, Krista Hurst, 41, of Birmingham, Michigan and Lesia Tatarsky, 37, of Warren, Michigan, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The women were transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Stevenson was transported to the Richmond Police Department, where he was charged with operating a watercraft under the influence.

Police said his blood alcohol level several hours after the accident was .16, double the legal limit.

The accident remains under investigation, and additional charges may filed.
