State police say the elderly driver whose car slammed into a piece of paving equipment on the Maine Turnpike in Gray Monday morning has died from the injuries he suffered in the crash.

Henry Roy, 89, of Lewiston died shortly after his arrival at Central Maine Medical Center, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Troopers said Roy struck a construction barrel and then collided with a road roller. He was pinned inside his 2006 Mercury Marquis and had to be rescued from the vehicle by first responders.

The operator of the roller, Blaine Bradeen, 49, of Livermore was taken to the hospital with leg injuries.

The northbound side of the turnpike had been reduced to one lane due to a paving project just prior to the Gray exit.

The road was shut down to northbound traffic, and motorists were advised to exit the turnpike at mile 53 in Falmouth to avoid the crash site.
