Truck Driver Who Drove Semi Into Median Charged With Distracted Driving

Photo, ME State Police

A truck driver whose search for a defogger switch took his attention from the road is now charged with distracted driving. The semi ended up in the median. Luckily, no one was injured.

Trooper John Darcy of the Maine State Police said in his report that it was the first time Steven Haggan, age 26 of Levant, had driven that particular truck. He was headed north on I-95 in Island Falls this morning, hauling wood chips, when the accident happened. Haggan was distracted, turning on the dome light in order to find the switch that heats the side mirrors and removes the fog, when he felt the rumble strips beneath his tires.

Haggan looked at the road and realized, too late, that he had crossed from the right lane and was headed for the median. He couldn’t stop the truck’s progress before it left the road and struck some trees. Damage to the truck was enough to disable it.

The Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Protection were contacted when it was discovered the truck’s fuel tank was fully submerged in the mud and was leaking fuel. As of noon today, crews were still on the scene, cleaning up and working to remove the truck. Haggan was issued a summons for distracted driving.
