A tractor trailer rollover in the Augusta area has reduced the Maine Turnpike, both north-and-southbound, to single-lane traffic.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the driver from Prince Edward Island, 44-year-old Duncan MacPhee fell asleep. The truck, loaded with french fries, struck the guardrail in the median just after 1 a.m. in Farmingdale, near the Northern Avenue overpass, coming to rest on its side on top of the guardrails. Neither the driver or his passenger were injured.

Crews have worked for hours to remove the truck and, as of 9:30 this morning, were still working at it. Once that job is completed, turnpike crews will need to replace more than 100 feet of guardrail. That effort will disrupt traffic for the rest of the day.

Motorists are advised that long traffic backups are expected throughout the day.
