Controversy surrounds Tim McGraw's decision to headline a concert benefiting Sandy Hook Promise, a non-profit organization founded by family members of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre.

All proceeds from the show will go to Sandy Hook Promise, which works to protect children from gun violence.

Some critics are calling the event a "gun control fundraiser."

McGraw told The Washington Post Thursday he supports gun ownership, but it requires education and safety.

Billy Currington had been scheduled to open the show but the singer cancelled his performance and posted on Facebook that he's "never been one to take on controversial issues."

Twenty children and six staff members were gunned down in the December 2012 shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The special concert will take place July 17 at XFINITY Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut.
