Mainers are rejoicing in the fact that warm weather has finally returned. I think most of us began to doubt whether it would ever happen. But with that heat comes a reminder to leave your pets at home, rather than in a hot car.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency posted a graph on its Facebook page today that says it all. Like, if it's 75 degrees outside, the temperature in your car rises to 94 degrees in just 10 minutes! So, saying that you'll 'only be in the store for a few minutes' probably won't save your pets from getting sick. (or worse!) And remember, this applies to children and the elderly as well. They can't handle the heat in the car either!

Still don't believe it? Try this....next time it's 75 or 80 degrees outside, park your vehicle where you would if you had pets inside. Crack the windows (like you would for your pets), and then YOU sit inside for 10 minutes. I'm betting you won't make it before you'll be hopping out and getting a cold drink.

When in doubt, leave the pets at home, in a cool room with a fan or an air conditioner. And make sure they have plenty of water that will stay cool. (don't set it in the sun) As for the kids or grandma, take them inside with you. Your pets may whine when you leave the house but, in the long run, they'll thank you for it. And think how happy they'll be to see you when you get home!

This picture says it all - closed cars are no place for kids or pets - they get hot FAST!
