Two people were hurt when the SUV they were in plunged off the viaduct on Route 1 in Bath Monday afternoon.

A vehicle driven by Melissa Medina, 37, of Windham, struck the guardrails, went off the viaduct and landed upside down on the bed of a pickup truck driven by Roy Ordway, 60, of Bath, police said on Monday.

Medina and her 12-year-old son had to be extricated from the SUV. They both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Maine Medical Center.

Ordway was not hurt in the accident.

As crews cleaned up the accident, the overpass was closed and traffic was re-routed through Bath, causing significant delays for drivers on Monday.

The accident remains under investigation. Police did not say what caused Medina's vehicle to strike the guardrails and go over the viaduct.
