The Netflix pictures make 'Moonrise Kingdom' look like a typical 'kids go to summer camp' flick. But, in reality, it's a bizarre, funny, and irreverent look at relationships.

Jim and I had bypassed this movie a couple of times, because we just weren't in the mood for a coming-of-age, camp runaway story. But, last night, we were browsing the titles on Netflix and decided to give this one a try. And we were so glad we did!

'Moonrise Kingdom' is the story of Sam and Susie and the weird, dysfunctional adults in their lives. Sam is a camper who runs away to be with his lady-love. Susie is the oldest in a strange family where the Mom, played by Frances McDormand, is always calling the kids through a megaphone. Her somewhat detached father is portrayed by Bill Murray. In addition, the mild-mannered Police Chief is Bruce Willis, while Edward Norton is the nerdy math-teacher-turned-scout-leader.

One of my favorite characters, however, was played by Bob Balaban who narrates the tale. He pops up frequently through the film, giving background on the characters as well as the island where the drama unfolds. He's got the New England historian/tour guide shtick down cold. And adds an interesting side dish to the multi-layered dramedy that will keep you engaged and laughing throughout.

Need a fun family movie post-turkey? If your kids are over 13, you might want to gather with them around Netflix and check out this movie. It's a hilarious romp!

The movie is rated PG-13 for some mild sexual content and smoking. Plus, there is a little mild violence.
