Thieves stole a backhoe and a pickup in Island Falls, and then used the backhoe to try and rob an ATM.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the incidents happened after midnight on Thursday. Someone stole a pickup truck and a backhoe. The robbers then used the backhoe to try and break open the ATM machine at the Katahdin Credit Union on Crystal Road.

When the robbery attempt failed, the pickup and the backhoe were then set on fire at two different locations, both within a quarter mile of the credit union. Police say no one has been charged. The State Fire Marshal's Office and the State Police are working together on this ongoing investigation.
