State Employees Will Get Paid Monday Despite Shutdown

Governor Paul Lepage has arranged for state employees to get paid for Monday, despite the fact that they're not working due to a government shutdown.

According to a media release, the Governor used the same authority he exercises in administratively closing state offices the day before Christmas or Thanksgiving so employees can enjoy an extended holiday. Today will be considered an administrative leave with pay for state employees who are currently laid off due to the shutdown, while essential workers who are on the job today will receive a compensatory day off to be used at a later date.

"It is unconscionable for state workers to lose a day's pay because of the Legislature's repeated failure to put a budget on my desk," LePage said in the release.

He went on to say that he hopes state workers will spend their day off enjoying state parks and 'all the wonderful summer activities Maine has to offer..' A budget vote is expected on Monday.
