Cancer is more prevalent in adults so that is where most of the research funds go. That’s why St. Baldrick’s Foundation has started their own fund raising for children’s cancer. Their biggest fund raiser is their head shaving event where participants sign up to have their heads completely shaved bald to show support to kids with cancer, this inspires friends and family to donate to the cause and brings awareness.

In 2012 the foundation hit the $100 million mark and has continued strong since. Anyone can volunteer to be a ‘shavee’ or a shaver, but if you don’t want to cut your hair you can always donate on their website.

I wasn't aware of this foundation at all until my 9-year-old cousin Dominic decided to do it. This year was his second time participating in the event when it came to his town in North Carolina. He puts me to shame with his bravery to go bald with a big smile on his face. It really makes me think about the bravery of the children suffering with involuntary hair loss along with an awful illness.

Rascal Flatts has been very active with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation after hearing the touching story about a young girl with Leukemia, the inspiration for their single ‘Skin (Sarabeth)’. Gary LeVox was a celebrity guest shaver during a St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser in early March to show his continued support for research. Of course he couldn't shave his own head with those signature locks!

The 5th annual St. Baldrick's on Maine Day event is in Orono, April 29. There are currently 24 participants and $995 raised so far. For more details or to find an event near you visit the St. Baldrick's Foundation website.

Rascal Flatt's 'Skin" music video tells Sarabeth's story, I dare you to not get choked up when you see the touching ending.
