Spring is on the way, whether it looks like it outside, or not. And this weekend, we begin Daylight Savings Time, which means two things. Set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night, and change the batteries in your smoke detectors. One could save you some embarrassment and the other could save your life!

As I was headed to work Thursday morning in Brewer, I was rerouted by Brewer Police and Fire who had Wilson Street blocked off for an apartment house fire. When I spoke with Fire Chief Brent Melvin later in the day, he told me damage to the building was minimal thanks, in part, to smoke detectors.

I've chatted with Jake Johnson of the Bangor Fire Department about fire safety and he says they can't stress enough how important smoke detectors are for your family's safety. Johnson told me that, when they have fatalities due to fire, it's most often in homes that lacked working smoke detectors.

So, this Saturday night, before you go to bed, make sure to set your clocks ahead one hour. That way, when you wake up in the morning, you won't be late for church (or work)! And sometime during the weekend, pick up some batteries and put them in your smoke detectors. That way you won't be 'the late (insert name here)!
