It's a fun and friendly competition between maternity wards each January 1st, as they report their first babies of the year, to determine who is the year's firstborn.

This year, it looks like the very first baby born in Maine for 2016 is Isiah Norman Daku, according to the BDN. He was born at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington at 12:46 a.m. to Meghan Bitterauf and Levi Daku. The results are unofficial but, first or not, he's a healthy boy at 9 pounds, 12.7 ounces, and 21.5 inches long. We don't have a picture of this little guy, but I'm sure he's beautiful!

In Bangor, the folks at Eastern Maine Medical Center report the first baby born in their maternity ward is Elayne Rose Watson (pictured above). The daughter of Mary-Jo Dennis and David Watson was born at 11:01 a.m., exactly one month early. She weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounce, and is 19 inches long.

Congratulations to the new families! It's a pretty great way to start the New Year!
