A Skowhegan man who was struck Tuesday by a vehicle while he crossed the road has died in the hospital.

The accident happened early Tuesday on U.S. Route 201 in Skowhegan as 84-year-old Charles Atwood was crossing the road after getting his morning newspaper. He was struck by a commercial box truck which then hit a vehicle driven by 36-year-old Aaron Norton of Madison. Both Norton and Atwood where taken by LifeFlight to the hospital in critical condition. The Morning Sentinel reports that Atwood passed away on Wednesday. At last report, Norton remained in critical condition.

The driver of the box truck, 67-year-old Michael Kelley of Clinton, was treated for minor injuries. Police say he swerved to try and avoid hitting the pedestrian, but ended up hitting him with the passenger side of his truck. When he swerved, he also hit the sedan, which was traveling in the opposite lane.
