Mainers will decide whether the state should legalize recreational marijuana in the general election this November.

Secretary of State Matt Dunlap announced Wednesday that about 11,000 signatures his office previously disqualified have now been validated, giving the citizens’ initiative enough signatures to appear on the ballot.

It would allow Mainers who are at least 21 to use, possess or transport up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. It would also place a 10% tax on marijuana sales.

If approved, Maine would join Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia in legalizing recreational pot.

In November 1999, Maine legalized medical marijuana when 62% of voters supported Question 2.
