U.S. Senator Angus King of Maine had a special message for a Midcoast student who is 1 of 53 students nationwide who qualified as state/territory finalists in the Doodle 4 Google contest.

King used his Facebook page on Tuesday to praise Ruth Havener, a student at Medomak Middle School.

"Your creativity, your artistic ability has made Maine proud, and we're rooting for you in the national competition," King said in a video posted on Facebook.

Voting in the Doodle 4 Google contest is currently underway. Participants are allowed to vote once per day until March 6 at 5 p.m. Five students will then be selected as national finalists.

Ruth's drawing, in the grades 6-7 group, features ocean animals and the message "what I see for the future is the same ocean with all of its beautiful creatures, staying in the wondrous places I know today."
