An anonymous couple paid for $10,000 worth of items on layaway at the Toys R Us store in South Portland last weekend.

Store manager Jay Roes told the Portland Press Herald that the money was applied towards the items that had been on layaway for the longest period of time.

He said almost all of the items were placed on layaway by parents who were purchasing Christmas presents for their children.

More than 100 customers benefited from the anonymous donation.

Roes said a woman who picked up her items Tuesday “was in tears” after she learned that her layaway balance had already been paid.

It's not the first time an anonymous donor has paid for items on layaway at the store, but Roes said Saturday's donation was by far the largest.
