A Searsport man faces a number of charges after police say he assaulted his estranged wife and forced her and a toddler into the backseat of his vehicle.

Jason Moulton, 34, is charged with burglary, two counts of domestic violence assault, two counts of violating a protection from abuse order, kidnapping and violating conditions of release.

Moulton allegedly entered the home without the woman's consent about 11 p.m. on May 16. Police say Moulton then forced his wife and a toddler into his vehicle, where the woman was assaulted.

A neighbor who witnessed the incident called police, and according to Belfast Police Sergeant John Gibbs, who spoke to the Penobscot Bay Pilot, officers “responded immediately” and were able to box Moulton's vehicle in with a police cruiser.

“The rear door came open while the vehicle was still in motion,” and the mother and child were able to escape, Sgt. Gibbs said.

Police said Moulton's mother drove him to the woman's home, but she hasn't been charged as officers are unsure if she was aware of her son's plans.

Moulton remained in custody Monday and is expected to appear in court on July 7.
