Every year, for several weeks leading up to Halloween, Jim and I celebrate Scary Movie Month. We got a bit of a jump start this year when we watched a cool thriller/ghost story starring none other than Harry Potter himself!

'The Woman in Black' was not available on Netflix streaming (where we get most of our flicks), so we got the DVD through the mail. Daniel Radcliffe stars as a young lawyer who travels to a remote, coastal village to close up the estate of a deceased woman. It becomes clear, at the beginning of the movie, that he's lost his wife and so is raising his young son alone, with the help of a nanny.

The movie is a period piece, and I have to say, Radcliffe looks pretty dashing in the old-style garb. He's not that geeky looking little kid anymore! And he does quite a convincing job of playing a man who innocently walks into a small community and instantly feels unwelcome. Parents pull their children from him as he walks down the street and the innkeeper tries to turn him away.

He goes to the home (which is huge and VERY gothic) he's been hired to close up, and weird things begin happening. He sees a woman in black standing outside and then...well....you have to watch the movie to find out! All in all, the acting in this movie is surprisingly good, given that it's a horror flick. It relies much more on the solid story and the talented actors than on special effects and silly creatures. Overall, an excellent, ghostly good time!
