A Rhode Island man was killed over the weekend in a snowmobile accident just west of Millinocket Lake.

The Maine Warden Service says the accident happened at around 5:43 p.m. on Saturday. 53-year-old Edmond Imondi was riding with two friends in T1 R9 WELS on a groomed ITS trail, when he failed to negotiate a right hand curve. Tracks in the snow indicated that the sled went straight into a series of trees to the left of the trail. Imondi struck the trees and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, but officials say it appears that speed and unfamiliarity with trail conditions are possible contributing factors. Assisting at the scene were Millinocket EMS and a Baxter State Park Ranger.

This is Maine's third snowmobile-related fatality this season.
