A puppy was killed in a single-car crash in Standish that also took out several utility poles.

WABI-TV reports the accident happened Wednesday night on the Dow Road. A car driven by 24-year-old Nicholas Cawood of Standish landed on its side and caught on fire after breaking off the poles. Cawood was originally trapped in the vehicle, but was helped out by neighbors while rescue crews were on their way. He suffered minor injuries but a 13-week old puppy was killed in the crash.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and Standish Fire Department received the call just after 9:00 Wednesday night. Officials say speed and alcohol were factors. Cawood has been charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol.
