Punxsutawney Phil came out of his den this morning and predicted an early spring!

It doesn't happen often, but this morning in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania, the weather prognosticator did NOT see his shadow, which means we're in for an early spring. I'm sure it's a relief for the mid-Atlantic states that were blasted by a huge winter storm recently. But, for Mainers, winter's never really started this year.

The tradition of Groundhog Day started with German Folklore in Pennsylvania during the 18th and 19th centuries, and has its roots in European folklore. The first documented reference dates back to 1841.

I'm not sure how much stock I put in the forecasting skills of a groundhog, but I've never doubted when he saw his shadow and told us we'd have another six weeks of winter. So I want to believe in his predication this year and get ready for spring!
