Some K-9 cops working in Maine's Corrections system get the protection they deserve.

From drug searches to crowd control the Department of Corrections uses four K-9's currently, and two of them are the recipients of new protective equipment.

Director of Security for the Maine Department of Corrections, Gary LaPlante, says Rex and Gunner are getting bullet and stab protective vests thanks to a $15,000 grant awarded by the Petco Foundation to Vested Interest in K9's Incorporated.

Corrections officers Troy Hood and Gunner work at the Mountain View Youth Development Center and the Charleston Correctional Facility.

K9 Handler Brain Donahue and Rex work at the Maine Correctional Center.

The dogs are trained in drug searches, crowd control, and suspect apprehension and are two of 16 K9's that are getting the protective vests.
